COMPLEX SYSTEMS AND SPORTS: Complex Systems insights to building effective teams
نویسنده
چکیده
This lecture discusses the characterization of effective teams (their complexity / variety) and the role of competition and cooperation in the formation of effective teams. The context for the discussion, sports, provides examples that are also relevant to many other aspects of society and biology.

Interpersonal pattern dynamics and adaptive behavior of multiple agents in team sports: A model and data
Ideas from ecological psychology and nonlinear dynamics characterize adaptive behavior as an emergent property of self-organization processes in the interpersonal interactions that occur between multiple agents in complex social systems such as industrial organizations, academic institutions and sports teams. A conceptual model, proposed to capture constraints on dynamics of decisions and actio...
متن کاملLead Us Not into Tanktation: A Simulation Modelling Approach to Gain Insights into Incentives for Sporting Teams to Tank
Annual draft systems are the principal method used by teams in major sporting leagues to recruit amateur players. These draft systems frequently take one of three forms: a lottery style draft, a weighted draft, or a reverse-order draft. Reverse-order drafts can create incentives for teams to deliberately under-perform, or tank, due to the perceived gain from obtaining quality players at higher ...

متن کاملUnderstanding constraints on sport performance from the complexity sciences paradigm: An ecological dynamics framework.
Glazier's suggestion for the constraints-led approach as a GUT for sport performance is a worthy proposal. What is missing from these preliminary insights is a principled basis, in the form of pillars, for understanding the cornerstones of the sports medicine profession, and this lack of an overarching theoretical framework is also somewhat of a limitation in Glazier's initial ideas, as we argu...
متن کاملMovement models from sports reveal fundamental insights into coordination processes.
Trends for studying coordination and control have shifted from simple movement models toward complex, multijoint actions in sports such as cricket. Use of such movement models exemplifies the nature of interacting constraints that shape emergence of coordination and control processes as proposed by dynamical systems theory and ecological psychology.
